Summary

In Miss Julie, a willful young aristocrat, whose perverse nature has already driven her fiancé to break off their engagement, pursues and effectively seduces her father's valet during the course of a Midsummer's Eve celebration。 The progress of that seduction and the play's stunning denouement shocked Swedish audiences who first attended the play in 1889。
Despite its controversial debut, this now-classic drama, inspired by the new ideas of naturalism and psychology that swept Europe in the late 19th century, helped to shape modern theater, and remains one of the most potent-and most frequently performed-of modern plays。 The full text of Miss Julie is reprinted here as translated by Edwin Björkman, complete with Strindberg's critical preface to the play, considered by many to be one of the most important manifestos in theater history。

honestly this was more of a 3。5/5as a work on its own, miss julie is a little lacklustre; not enough happens to justify the violently impulsive decisions made by the charactersas a play to be adapted into something new, it’s wonderfully fun, giving us two characters whose intentions are so parasitical and words are so performative that you can’t help but have fun。 stressful and once again the man is awful, but delightfully nuanced when you mess with the context

this is mostly out of spite tbh but please read something else

I REALLY enjoyed this。 It’s short, but it gets its message across in a very engaging way。 Loved the dialogue, I was really intrigued the whole time。 My only gripe is that the playwright is horribly sexist, but given the time period yadda yadda…

2/6 points, play-script, Hauptpersonen all zu unsympathisch und unlogisch, es ist mir völlig egal was mit ihnen passiert…

You think I am weak。 Oh, I should like to see your blood flowing—to see your brain on the chopping block, all your sex swimming in a sea of blood。 I believe I could drink out of your skull, bathe my feet in your breast and eat your heart cooked whole。 You think I am weak; you believe that I love you because my life has mingled with yours; you think that I would carry your offspring under my heart- though it’s a shame it ends with aspersions about one’s lowly family。 The speech is also such an exception to Julie in the rest of the play who so loves being swayed - “JULIE。 Oh, how I repent all this。 If at least you loved me!” anyway fun to have stage directions demanding “womanliness”Look I’d put money on nobody from The Times having read this play it doesn’t speak truth to power it doesn’t bear some kind of overwhelming truth that would inconvenience the presumably woke literature faculty at the uni of sussex it’s mostly just a kind of not great play or at least one which has been done better elsewhere and it’s pretty unremarkable it’s been taken off the syllabus 。。。more

1ST READ: Complicated themes and issues come up in this play。 Author was clearly a misogynist and a man of the late 19th century。 Gonna have to read more than once to fully understand these characters and the context better。

This play highlights the theme of class and gender。 Miss Julie and Jean have a strange relationship and the biggest obstacle in it is their difference in class and gender。 Very repetitive and lacks depth。 Was an interesting read, but didn't strike me as an astonishing classic, but rather a classic play that you should know just because。 Almost came off comedic even though it is a modern drama。 Some good scenes for actors between Jean and Miss Julie。 This play highlights the theme of class and gender。 Miss Julie and Jean have a strange relationship and the biggest obstacle in it is their difference in class and gender。 Very repetitive and lacks depth。 Was an interesting read, but didn't strike me as an astonishing classic, but rather a classic play that you should know just because。 Almost came off comedic even though it is a modern drama。 Some good scenes for actors between Jean and Miss Julie。 。。。more
